New .org registry reports smooth transition

29th January, 2003

Public Interest Registry, the new manager of the .org domain name registry, has reported the smooth transition of the technical systems for .org from the previous incumbent, Verisign Global Registry Services.

Registry operations had ceased for a 48 hour window to allow the transfer to take place, but all systems were operational when PIR opened for business on 26 January. According to PIR, some 18,000 transactions were completed within the first 30 minutes of reopening, with 170 concurrent connections being made to the registry. Domain names were being registered at the rate of 1 domain every 6 seconds.

David Maher, chairman of the PIR board, praised PIR's technical partners Afilias for the successful move and prounounced this largest ever transfer of data from one registry to another since the Internet began "a truly historic moment".
