Geek domain just one step away
5 June, 2003
The geek.nz second-level domain is now just one step from cyberspace, following unanimous approval by the InternetNZ council this week.
The 14-0 vote is an interim decision. The council will take a final vote at its next meeting in July, when it will consider implementation details and any further submissions.
The suggestion for a geek.nz domain was promoted by a group of self-described “assortment of kiwi geeks” and first presented for discussion by InternetNZ in December 2002.
Respondents to an InternetNZ straw poll were largely in favour: the poll received 956 positive votes, 103 against, and six abstentions. The proposal has seen much interest from the IT community in New Zealand and abroad.
